My class learned the basics of Premiere Pro through 13 videos on ASB classroom. Thankfully I was working on the same platform (Apple computer) as the instructor which made it a lot easier to understand. When the instructor moved clips to specific folders it looked exactly the same on my screen which overall helped me. I was familiar with some steps because of how comfortable I am with my laptop. I think knowing how to download media onto my desktop helped me, but also knowing how to drag media into Premiere Pro was a breeze.
Here is a picture of the 13 videos I used to learn Premiere Pro
At first I was confused because the instructor would say a step, but I didn't know I needed to click something on my keyboard or on the screen. For example, I didnt understand how to drag clips from the source panel into the timeline panel of my screen. However, I went back and re-watched that part carefully, and noticed him hover his mouse over a "flm reel". With this information I figured out that I needed to go over the “film reel” button to then drag my ideal clip into the timeline. After getting the confusion figured out it felt easy and the functions of the app made more sense.
Here is a picture of the icon I need to hover over before dragging in the clip.
A challenge I noticed throughout this process was my storage. By default on a mac computer when you download files on a desktop they are also downloaded on your iCloud account. So when I went to export of my clips I had trouble because I didn’t have enough storage on my iCloud account. And on Premiere Pro a warning symbol kept popping up. To fix this issue I deleted all the clips and redownloaded them to fix the symbol. And changed my settings so that it wouldn’t download to my iCloud account.
Throughout the process of completing my clip I learned a lot of patience. I know i’m not perfect and don’t recognize everything yet with this software. However, with the knowledge that I learned I can see how “easy” Premiere Pro is set up. For example, one major hack I learn was the use of “O” and “I” on the keyboard. These two letters help with shortening the section of the clip you want to use. In contrast of pressing these keys the instructor also taught me how to on Premiere Pro itself. I personally found the keyboard method easier and I will use this for my portfolio project.
Here shows the mouse hovering over the (O) function. Which is called the output of the clip.
With the basic information that I have I would like to learn even more techniques on Premiere Pro. I have multiple friends in a tv class who use this app that have offered to help me. So, I want to create aid them in their work so I could learn as well.
Becoming familiar with Premiere Pro will be essential for when I start my 2 min film opening. Now that I know the gists of importing, exporting, and basics. It’s up to me to expand my knowledge and learn different techniques. A major technique that I know I will be using is “Lower Thirds”. This is adding text to your video, and in a film opening text are needed to show credits.
Here is my final 45 second edited clip.
